indefenseoffood-tofu-6Michael Pollan, who was the reporter in the documentary Food, Inc. which came out a few years ago and turned many people into vegans, is back with a new message.

IN DEFENSE OF FOOD!

His documentaries are in one way comforting and you might go  YES I KNEW IT, I TOLD YOU !!

On the other hand, they are confronting and big eye openers.

The problem, he noticed after his last documentary, is that People did not know anymore what actually is left to eat? what is the good diet I should follow?

People are confused also because of the new headlines that pop up everyday.

One day it is good to eat protein, the other day it is not

One day fat is bad for you, the other day it is not (depending on which kind of fats)

One day you should stop drinking coffee, the other day they even advice you to have 1-3 coffees a day…

Compare to the United States, where Michael is from and the target he mainly speaks too, we move on a bit better food conscious level here in Switzerland. Because of the fact that we are not that much bombarded with the different kind of products and commercials…

Next to the constant changes in nutritional advice, what do we actually know about diet and health as a standard educated person?

Because of all those advices and the big amount of opportunities in produce there is a heavy change on health.

More & more kids (mostly in the U.S.) get Typ II Diabetes at very young age. There are lot of chronic diseases linked to died…. WESTERN DIETS = Lots of meat, white flour, vegetable oil & sugar, very little fruits, veggies and whole grains.

Because it is CHEAP, CONVENIENT & PROCESSED.

Those kind of processed “foods” are manipulated so you tend to get more cravings for them and it raises the profit for the food industry.

Corn, Soy(really make sure you get NON GMO and organic Soy Products) and Wheat factories are running a great business, but those are also the most processed foods you can get and destroy your health.

Wheat flour for example is that much processed that all the minerals and vitamins are taken out.

This opens up opportunities for  another market: The Nutrionism Market Gap:

While we destroy the real food by processing it we miss the vitamins and minerals. There are none left, so a good market trick is, to add them chemically into it and brand it as a positive adding item with the product.

Another big and bad change Michael Pollan mentions is, that “we” consume 1000% more sugar a day then we did 200 years ago.

“When Soda costs less than water, we have a problem…!!!”

They say they are healthy juices but the too much fructose intake can destroy your liver.

Michael Pollan rewinds and goes back to the beginning of life:

When you are a new born baby you get (if you are fortunate) the mothers milk. There are a lot of bifidobacteria in there that protect us and help to develop our digestive system.

A good start to get into life.

But then where to look next: In early early times we would live after the HUNTING&GATHERING SYSTEM (which some cultures, for example in Tanzania, still follow).

The principe of that diet is to figure out a way that nature has to offer!!!

They eat what you can find in nature, which are mostly roots and plants.

USE SMALLER PLATES

SERVE THE VEGETABLE FIRST SO YOU FILL YOUR STOMACH WITH THE GOOD STUFF

MAKE WATER YOUR BEVERAGE OF CHOICE

STOP EATING JUST BEFORE YOU ARE FULL

EAT MORE LIKE THE FRENCH DO: THE WAY THEY EAT IS A CELEBRATION, THEY EAT SLOWLY SO THE PLEASURE INCREASES

EAT IN A SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

CELEBRATE THE FOOD

SERVE SMALLER PORTION

HAVE A ROUTINE

ENJOY!!

DON’T EAT ANYTHING YOUR GREAT GRANDMOTHER WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED AS FOOD

BREAK THE RULES ONCE IN A WHILE…. LIKE OSCAR WILD SAID:

“ALL THINGS IN MODERATION INCLUDING MODERATION”

Definitely a documentary that I advice you to watch.

I guess what I like about this newest documentary of Michael Pollan, is again that it is so HONEST AND OBVIOUS. But also that, although it is more on the veggie eater path,and although he also mentions that plant eater have a longer life expectancy (based on his research of the adventist group), there is NO SIDE  that he takes in favour, the only thing that is the truth is to eat real natural food.

And then again, although I am vegan, out of many reasons (like ethical, health and personal love for animals) there is no wrong or right to go… as long as it is real food. Listen to your own GUT! Get in contact with your own digestion and body. WHAT IS IT THAT I NEED, WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD. No Company or Nutritionist can tell you this. It is only YOU!

AND MOST DEFINITELY TREAT YOUR BODY AS YOUR HOLY TEMPEL AND THINK TWICE WHAT YOU PUT IN THERE !
